Celebrities are usually among the first to wear new designer collections right off the runway, but for the 2022 Grammys, the night's best looks felt...kind of familiar. Rather than reaching for the latest creations, the night's must-see stars — from musical artists to RuPaul's Drag Race stars — shopped the archives instead, either showing up in a true vintage ensemble or rocking a reimagined version, paying homage to industry icons.

It's this approach that proves it: When an outfit is good, it'll stand the test of time—and can feel fresh even years later when styled in a slightly different way. Take a look at the best fashion tributes from the Grammys, including a blonde Dua Lipa wearing Cindy Crawford's old dress and H.E.R., who channeled Aretha Franklin in custom DUNDAS.

H.E.R.

Back in 1976, Aretha Franklin showed up at the American Music Awards in a bold yellow outfit, taking home the award for Best Female Soul Artist. So, why wouldn't H.E.R. want to channel that legendary energy at the 2022 Grammys? The singer, who well known for paying tribute to her heroes (remember her Prince-inspired outfit from the 2021 Oscars?), walked the red carpet in a similar yellow jumpsuit, which was custom-made by DUNDAS.

"I have always been really inspired by the 1970s and especially the music scene at that time," the designer, Peter Dundas, told InStyle over email. "It is something that I share with H.E.R., as well as her stylist, Wouri Vice. When he showed me the image of Aretha Franklin, I knew it had to be that vibe, so I designed a kaftan jumpsuit in yellow and orange ombré  — which also happens to be one of my favorite color combinations. The jumpsuit has a golden phoenix, and its tail winds down the legs and the wings spread out over the arms and back."

Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion

Dua Lipa kicked off the night in a strappy black Versace gown that was once worn by model Cindy Crawford in 1992, but she wasn't done reminding us of the past. When she took to the stage with Megan Thee Stallion, we immediately drew comparisons to a matching Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston moment from the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. Their black, minimalistic, V-neck dresses looked like updated versions of the original brown '90s designs.

How many icons channeling icons can you find in this photo? Drag Race legends showed up on the red carpet in some of the most memorably looks from Grammys history, including Ariana Grande's voluminous gown and Britney Spears's white dress, complete with a fuzzy stole.

Brandi Carlile

It's not an exact replica, but Brandi Carlile did admit to channeling Elton John with her sparkly BOSS suit.

"I'm finally morphing into Elton John, which is my dream since day one," she told Laverne Cox during an interview for E!'s Live from the Red Carpet. Fun fact: that statement jacket alone weighed 40 lbs!
